I love cooking.

Food is the corner stone of everything we do, we do it every day of our lives and in Australia we’re lucky enough to have amazing produce at our finger tips.

But there it was staring me in the face as I opened the fridge looking for inspiration for my next meal.

Two things hit me…

  1. Since when did a square box, that hums and emits bright lights become a place for inspiration? and
  2. Why yet again was I looking at lifeless, sludgy food covered in slime? I’d only been shopping yesterday?

I was looking in all the wrong places….. amazing local produce wasn’t in my fridge that’s for sure!

So what was in my fridge and what did it mean for the meals I was about to dish up?

Most food items in your fridge and pantry have travelled farther than you are likely to go on an annual holiday.

This means that fossil fuels were consumed for the foods transport, refrigeration, and processing.  it’s a greasy supply chain, oiled every step of the way!

So here's what you don't know about the food in your fridge that will shock you...

Fruits and vegetables have a set amount of nutrients when harvested. They then start to consume these nutrients in order to stay alive. So the longer our food sits around or travels to reach you the fewer nutrients it contains...

As delicious as strawberries are you shouldn’t be eating them all year round. The truth is that out of season fruit and vegetables taste like a cardboard picture of their former selves.
