Why Eating Seasonally will save you dollars and put flavour back on your plate…

    by Lauren Branson

Local Eating Seasonally at Your Food Collective

I’m not sure when we started eating tasteless food? We’ve been trained so well to accept it.

Is it because it’s too hard to do anything else or simply because we’ve forgotten what food should really taste like. Maybe we’ve also forgotten how to wait…

As they say nothing good comes easy.

So why should you wait when it comes to the food you’re eating?

Local Producers at Your Food Collective

    5 Tips to Eating Seasonally

“Waiting for foods to come into season means tasting them when they are good, but waiting is also part of most value equations. Treating food this way can help move eating from the Routine Maintenance Department over to the Recreation division”. (Barbara Kingsolover)

    1. Get to know what’s in season where you live…

Check out what’s in season in your neck of the woods. Knowledge is the key to success!

    1. Shop smart…

Buying food that’s in season directly from local producers will not only benefit your health but also be kind to your wallet.

    1. Don’t complicate things…

Keep your meals simple to start with and slowly experiment as you get more familiar with new flavours and textures. There are also amazing ideas online if you get stuck.

    1. Get down and Dirty…

There is nothing more rewarding than growing your own food. From a humble pot of rosemary to heirloom tomatoes, whatever you produce will bring a smile to you face and satisfaction to your belly. If gardening is not for you, check out what’s happening at your local community garden.

    1. Experiment with preserving & pickling

Preserving or pickling fruits and vegetables is a beautiful way to capture the essence of each season. It can be as simple as freezing berries or taking your time to experiment with canning and fermenting. Whatever you create you’ll enjoy the journey and learn along the way.

Local Producers at Your Food Collective

Yeah, ok that’s all well and good but how does it fit into my busy life? We were thinking the same thing, so we created Your Food Collective, we made it easy! Now you can purchase directly from over 50 local producers in the comfort of your living room. Everything’s local, in season and picked just for you! What are you waiting for? We promise you’ll love it!

P.S. At Your Food Collective producers are paid fairly for what they do. Yep that means up to 80% of your dollar goes straight back to the farmer, that’s up to four times more than major supermarkets! I know where I’m shopping!!
