Wake up Your Breakfast with a Smoothie Bowl

by Bronni Page

Local Wake up Your Breakfast with a Smoothie Bowl

If you like to shake things up in the New Year, breakfast is a great place to start. And Mum was right, breaky probably is the most important meal of the day, so why not make it a meal to remember?

Hello, Smoothie Bowl
The new kid on the breakfast block is a smoothie bowl - a cool, nutritious combo of fruits, seeds, nuts, proteins, good fats, some complex carbohydrates.... (even veggies, shhh!)... blended and served in a pretty bowl or jar to make a very decadent and dessert-looking way to start the day.

Often based on frozen fruit and/or vege, a smoothie bowl is perfect for hot summer days too. Plus, get the balance of ingredients just right, and a single smoothie bowl can fuel you for hours, boost nutrition and help replace those sugary packet breakfasts many of default to.

How to Create a Super Smoothie Bowl
Creating a smoothie bowl is simple, but it does require a little bit of method and some forward planning. Once you get the hang of it though, we reckon soggy cereals will be a thing of the past!

Step 1 - Base Ingredients
It's all about the base, consisting 300g frozen fruit, 1/4 cup frozen vegetablesand 1/3 cup liquid. Bananas, berriesand mangowork well, as do pureed sweet potato or cauliflower, or spinach (fresh or frozen). For your liquids, choose a milk/mylk or your choice, water, kombucha or kvass. (We partcularly love a teaspoon of nut mylk base with a slosh of water)

Step 2 - Booster Ingredients

Step 3 - Flavour, Sweeten & Top

Apart from your toppers (which make it look pretty!) adding a flavour (cocoa, cinnamon or vanilla) or a sweetener such as honeyis completely up to you and your tastebuds.

Step 4 - Get Bowling
Blitz any nuts of seeds into a fine powder, if desired, then blend up with your chosen base ingredients until smooth. Next, mix in your flavours and sweeteners. Spoon into your bowl, and decorate with toppings of fresh fruit, extra nuts/seeds or whatever you fancy to make it look amazing.

Step 5 - Breakfast Like a Pro!
Voila! Fill up on your beautiful, healthy, filling breakfast.

Our Go-To Combos
To get you started, here are a few flavour combinations we love. Remember to add your own flair with your choice of yummy toppings.
