Nothing screams summer like watermelon. Juicy, sweet and sticky! They’re the perfect late afternoon snack and make an amazing pick me up juice.
So why is it becoming more economical to dig a crop of delicious summer melons back into the ground than harvest them?
It’s all a question of seeds!
Everyone’s asking it…
are there seeds in that?
Ohhh……. I don’t like seeds.
The truth is that if it weren’t for the seed there wouldn’t be any fruit at all!
The fruit is the juicy tempter that entices a beautiful creature to eat the seed and start the process of germination and growth all over again. It’s biology 101, reproduction. For a little more clarity… the creators of Grease 2 spell it out perfectly.
Now we’ve sorted out the basics…
What is a seedless melon and where do they come from?
Seedless melons are sterile hybrids of traditional seeded melons. They’re much harder to grow and require twice the growing space because you also need to plant traditional melons to fertilize them. Their seedless-ness also means that for each new crop you need to buy new seeds from a commercial seed company, and where’s the sustainability in that?
So does it really matter if there are seeds in your melon? They might just be the future of melons all together…
Another great reason to eat watermelons with seeds in them is that the seeds themselves are full of fantastic health benefits! Do these guys ever stop giving? They are jam packed full of healthy fats and important minerals like zinc, magnesium, iron and copper. 28 grams of watermelon seeds has 25% of the required daily iron intake for an adult! Amazing!
So when you’re planning your next party or just looking for a cool snack on a hot afternoon, reach for a watermelon and love every seed as well!
