Like many Australian children my earliest lunchbox memories begin with the humble apple…
They were comically large as a kid and always eaten whole.
The cores often hastily shoved in strange classroom spaces… behind the heater, in the bookshelf, rotten and bruised within the deep, dark depths of my backpack.
In my early days I was a Grannysmith supporter! My older brother adored red apples, so in an act of childhood defiance…. I chose ‘the green ones’.
This loyalty to the Grannysmith apple continued throughout my entire school life, often paired with a ham sandwich and popper but… if I’m perfectly honest I hated them. The consequences of my steadfast commitment were all too real as I forced those sour, tongue attacking bites down my throat… every… single… day!!!!
It wasn't until I’d moved out of home that I begun experimenting… with apples that is!
Although it felt like I was flying the white flag of defeat, I started my independent apple journey with The Royal Gala… my brother’s choice. Sweet and mild in flavour it’s tough exterior had me longing for something with a little more balance.
Queue the Mutsu… Smooth and green just like my deadly childhood friend but with a softer sweet/tart flavour that didn't declare war on my tastebuds.
Eventually, like a well travelled lady of the apple world I settled on the Pink Lady crunchy and tart taste with a sweet finish. Pink Lady apples were a rarity in my house growing up, a boutique and coveted variety, so naturally this was an apple I could see myself with long term! It’s juicy flesh and fizzy burst of flavour, had me at hello.
My favourite of course are those picked by Sophie and her team at Hillside Harvest. Their apples are the créme dela créme - handpicked at their orchards in Orange and travelling less than 300kms to my door. Fresh… not floury and lasting a hell of a lot longer than the common store bought fruit.
Finally, I've kissed my apple dating days goodbye and welcomed the apple of my dreams into my life.
