Daring to Dream – Amber Drop Honey Unplugged

Watching Sven open a hive and work with the bees is amazingly meditative. He is completely calm, and I’m sure the bees can tell. To me it looks like Sven was born a bee keeper but he’s waited more than 35 years to follow his dreams.

We’ve all been there, asking our selves if we’re really enjoy what we do, for ever tempted to make the sea change, through caution to the wind and follow our dreams…

Well Sven and Ana did exactly that. After a few years of dabbling, in 2017 they decided to dive in head first and make bee keeping their full time passion.

Known as the ‘rescue bee people’ it was the opportunity to do their bit for saving local bee populations that first caught their attention. Alarmed by the reality that bee populations were on the decline and that a world with out pollinators such as bees would also mean a world with out fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, (I’m not sure exactly what that leaves), they set to work.

Taking a more challenging approach Sven decided to specialise in rescuing bees that had swarmed into inconvenient places, like electricity boxes, wall crevices, school playgrounds and letter boxes. Thriving on the challenge of extracting the hives and relocating them to their pristine property on the mid north coast, after just 4 months they had more than 35 hives and it’s never stopped growing.

They currently have 130 hives and on a warm day you can stand on their back veranda and the whole place hums as bees are busy foraging on local paper barks, swamp mahogany and their delightful mango trees.

Do they ever look back?

After making the change to something that they love Ana and Sven are in it for the long haul!Their passion grows with each hive they save and selling their products direct to the public continually motivates them. Realising that people value what they’re doing and love their honey is more than enough to keep them going!!
