Healing and reconfiguring our current food systems will positively contribute to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations (UN). Doing food better will also significantly help meet net zero emissions targets.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals? The SDGs are the core framework to support the UNs Decade of Action - a shared vision to end poverty, rescue the planet and build a peaceful world by 2030. To date more than 193 countries have adopted these goals and are contributing to their advancement.
People Power -Each and every one of us can, (and must!) take action toward creating a better future. It is possible to drive change and our everyday decisions can impact these ambitious but necessary targets. Rethinking food is a very real and potent agent of change.
Our Current Food System -Our current food system accounts for nearly a quarter of our global carbon emissions. As individuals, food makes up around 30% of our carbon footprint (this is more than our transport and home energy use combined). Food production also contributes to biodiversity loss, land degradation and waste production.
There are two interlinked pillars of sustainability we’re focused on: Regenerating our Planet, and Regenerating our People
We are committed to truly understanding the intricacies of food- so that you don’t have to! Food is a multi-faceted beast. An awareness of what we eat, where it comes from, who grew it and how it was grown is more important for our health and that of the planet than most of us realise.
As a team, we’re proud to be constantly learning, evolving, challenging, improving and finding better ways to quantify what we do so we can drive lasting change through food. We invite you to keep us on track!
If you think something’s missing, or there’s a better way, please reach out! Together, we can get food right and create a food system that’s nourishing our planet and its people.
When it comes to the environmental impact and nutritional content of food we need to start with how our food is grown. Food production accounts for more than 80% of a product's carbon footprint, resource use and impact on biodiversity. The soil conditions in which a product is grown are directly linked to it’s nutrient level.
Healthy Soil = Healthy Planet = Healthy People
At Your Food Collective we works with growers who are on a regenerative journey. This means that they grow with respect to the systems and processes that support our planet. A key component of regenerative farming is improving soil health through crop rotation, no-till farming and minimal use of synthetic inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. Regenerative farming is also pretty magical when it comes to carbon sequestration. It’s thought to be one of the fundamental tools we can use to draw down carbon from the atmosphere and store it back in our soils.
Healthy Soil = Better Food = Less Carbon in our Atmosphere
How are we tracking? Using the world's largest product sustainability database we are ranking the on-farm footprint of our products against 7 key impact measurements including greenhouse gas emissions, processing, water use, labour risk, biodiversity, land use, animal welfare and soil health. We are the only grocery offering in Australia to add this sort of rigorous data assessment to our claims. Using this assessment we can say with confidnce that 80% of our products are in the top 25% of products that are better for the planet. Look for the planet icons on products to show you how sustainable they are.
Food miles is the distance food is transported from the time of it’s making until it reaches the end consumer (that's you). The further our food travels to reach our tables the larger the carbon footprint and the lower the nutrient content.
Low food miles = smaller carbon footprint = better food.
The average Australian grocery basket travels more than 71 000km and consumes nearly 17 000 tonnes of CO2e before it reaches the average Australian front door. That’s almost the same as travelling around the Earth twice! To offset these emissions through tree planting you would need to plant over 280 000 trees and grow them for 10 years!
Your Food Collectiveand Food Miles -At YFC we’re above average and we invite you to join us. By doing your weekly shop with YFC you'll be slashing your food miles by upto 90%!
Look for the food miles icons for every product showing you just how far your food has travelled.
Eating food that’s been grown in season is better for you and the planet. Out of season food takes more resources to grow (think heating greenhouses in winter), is often imported (90% of the garlic consumed in Australia is imported) or transported from distant growing regions. The convenience of our current supermarkets means that we can buy out-of-season produce at any time of year, often without even knowing we’re doing it.
The beautiful thing about eating produce that’s in season, is that it has a smaller carbon footprint and doesn’t taste like cardboard.
Keep an eye out for seasonality icons on our produce to help you follow the seasons.
Our vision is to create a network of waste free, carbon neutral Food Hubs and electric last mile delivery (that’s bringing it to your doorstep).
As of November 2021 our operations have been carbon neutral. We’re powered by 100% renewable energy and are staying close to the development of electric delivery vehicles. For now we have offset our remaining operational footprint with Trace. Our offsets have planted over 818 trees in both local and international programs.
In Australia we waste more than 7.6 million tonnes of food each year costing more than $36 billion. To halve Australia’s
food waste by 2030 (yes that’s the national target), we need to reduce food waste through distribution by fifty percent
Through our bespoke ‘just in time ordering’ process we have reduced food waste through distribution by 100%. Food that
doesn’t meet our quality standards is given to local charities. Anything else is commercially composted or fed to friendly chooks.
Our vision is to create a food system that’s packaged sustainability from farm to table. That means no single use of plastics or packaging. We've already made significant improvements here!
For example, we’ve replaced plastic cooling components with 100% compostable and reusable wool liners.
When it comes to the packing we use to get your food to your front door our focus is on circularity. This means we use
products that follow a circular resource pathway and can be reused multiple times before they're composted or recycled. Goodbye single use boxes!
So how are we tracking?Everything we use at our food hubs to package and deliver your food is reusable or recyclable. We’re 99% plastic free and are working with our producers to achieve the same goal.
Select a set box or buy what you want.
We deliver across Sydney, Newcastle and Maitland and have pick up locations across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
Your local producers pick your order, we box it up and hand it over to you at one of our pick-up locations or deliver it to your door.
Making Local Easy!
