In 2013 Leanne and Allan returned to their beautiful property along the banks of Wybong Creek, just west of Scone. What they didn’t know when they returned home was that in five years they’d be running a thriving egg business.
Their 700 acre property called ‘The Farm’, is now home to more than 900 Hy-Line chooks living the high life! Free to graze on lush pasture and sleeping in modern Chicken Caravans, it’s no surprise that the eggs taste so good! Those adorable chooks are busy laying over 6000 eggs a week for which there is no shortage of demand!
In France you hear people talking about the Terroir of a particular wine: Terroir is how a region’s climate, soil and aspect affect the taste of a wine. For dedicated producers like Leanne and Allan this is no surprise, and in no way is it limited to wine! Leanne talks about the Terroir of her eggs, their rich yolks, and herby flavor. It’s what keeps customers coming back week after week.
What’s in a Name?
The Golden Egg Farm….
You might think the Golden Egg refers to the amazing coloured yolks of Leanne’s eggs. It’s true, each egg is a rich golden colour, testament to the conditions in which the chooks are kept and fed. However, there’s a little more to it than that.
As Allan tells it, when they were just starting out, Leanne’s love of animals saw her bring home two chooks and a stunning Wyandotte rooster for a grand total of $250. A pretty price to pay for something that could have only cost $50!
So that’s when it stuck, “The Golden Egg” because each egg that those hens laid was worth a small fortune!
