Myth: there's a single certification that means good food.
Unfortunately, it’s hard understanding how food is grown and what it means. There are so many different definitions, and many are open to interpretation. It's easy to get lost in the jargon.
When it comes to fruit and vegetables, there's a lot of confusion around organic, certified organic, spray freeand pesticide free. We had a chat with some growers to try and make it a bit easier with a guide to each. If you're curious read on. If you're happy to get on with getting fresh sustainable food to your front door get shopping. Rest assured we spend a lot of time debating what's the most sustainable source of any given product. If you have a question about a specific product, get in touch.
Organic and biodynamic farming doesn't rely upon synthetic chemicals and other unnatural interventionist approaches. This means no artificial pesticides, no synthetic herbicides, no hormones and no growth promotants. Organic farming does, however, use naturally occurring pesticides and herbicides.
Due to the high cost of organic certification a lot of producers grow their food organically but are not certified. At Your Food Collective we have a number of such organic growers, including Amber Drop Honey, BareNaturesKin, Half Acre Farm, Hillview Herb Farm, Hunter Natural, Hunter Valley Produce, Moore Family Farm, Pura Vida Organics, Riverbank, Riverflats Estate, Spicy Creek, Tinklers Wines, The Golden Egg Farm, The Whole Food Family, and Westview Limes.
Organic certification requires an independent team of assessors to ensure that farmers, processors and others in the production chain comply with rules and regulations set by the organic community.
The high cost of certification is a challenge for many, particularly smaller growers, and often results in prohibitively expensive products for customers. We have a growing number of certified organic producers, including the Australian Organic Food Co.
The terms “pesticide-free” and “spray free” are often used interchangeably, and can be misleading. For example, if something is labelled “spray-free”, the crop may have been spared from being sprayed with a chemical pesticide, but the soil could have been primed with artificial fertiliser or the seeds may have been dipped in fungicide. If something is labelled “pesticide-free”, a farmer may not have used synthetic herbicides or insecticides, but may have used genetically modified plants or seeds.
Conventionally grown food can use synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. The amount of these will vary significantly from grower to grower.
Both organic and conventional foods are grown to the same strict quality and safety standards. If conventional fruits and vegetables are washed in an apple cider vinegar solution, most of the chemicals residue, if any, can be removed.
At Your Food Collective we work with a number of conventional growers who take a holistic approach to pest management and growing. They endeavour to use natural techniques where possible and avoid the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers.
Whilst the jury is still out on whether organic produce is better for you than conventionally grown foods, there’s a mountain of science that tells us that eating food that is as fresh as possible has significant health benefits.
From the moment food is picked or harvested it starts to lose nutrients Food grown locally and picked to order is the best thing you can fuel up on. Organic or not, after a good wash, locally grown produce will give you everything you need and more to grow a healthy and happy mind, body and soul.
